Travel to one of the largest earthfill dams in the world. The visit will start with a tour of SaskPower’s Coteau Creek Hydroelectric Generating Station where visitors will learn about their outstanding record of no lost time injuries in 55 years and the current rehabilitation work underway to overhaul their generating units. From there, visitors will transition to the spillway to meet some of the Operations and Maintenance staff that steward the extreme consequence dam, learn about some of the intricacies with construction, the spillway and water management of the reservoir. The final stops of the tour include East Side Pump Station and the recently rehabilitated M1 Canal which together convey water for 75,000 irrigated acres.

Tour capacity is limited to 30 people. All attendees must wear CSA approved steel toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses and high visibility vest. Attendees must provide the safety footwear. Hard hats, glasses and vests will be provided. Failure to provide the required footwear will result in an attendee not being able to participate in the tour. The tour will be travelling to areas with high decibel levels. Hearing protection will be provided.

Learn about the characteristics of potash tailings and brine pond dams and the process of extracting potash from 1 km underground to the finished product of potassium fertilizer.

The tour will visit one of Saskatchewan’s conventional potash mines showcasing the underground salt deposit, the mill, and Tailings Management Area as visitors learn how potassium fertilizer is produced. Exploration drilling for potash in the Allan area was carried out in the 1950s and 1960s. The Allan mine was built by a consortium of companies in the 1960s. Potash production began at Allan in April 1968 and the mine has run on a continuous basis since then other than short-term shutdowns taken for inventory management purposes and or plant maintenance and construction work.

Tour capacity is limited to 20 people. All attendees must wear CSA approved steel toe boots complete with metatarsal guard, hard hat, safety glasses and high visibility vest. Attendees must provide their own safety footwear and long-sleeved shirt and pants. Hard hats, non-prescription safety glasses, hearing protection, and vests will be provided by Nutrien. Failure to provide the required personal protective clothing will result in an attendee not being able to participate in the tour. The tour will be travelling underground and into areas with high decibel levels, dust, and heat. Tour participants should be in good physical health and able to traverse elevated walkways and stairs.
