Design and Performance Assessment of Spillways and Energy Dissipation Structures– Part 2: Physical and CFD Modeling

In partnership with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, the CDA is proud to present the 4th annual technical webinar series highlighting practical applications and case studies of evolving dam safety practices and advanced technologies for water dams.

Having reliable spillway structures that will operate and perform as designed is critical to the safety of the dam. As guardians, these structures stand ready to pass substantial flows during infrequent and extreme events when called upon. However, given that they seldom operate at or near design values, their actual performance under these demanding conditions is largely unknown. As time passes, changes to the original flood handling requirements or adverse changes to the physical condition of the structures introduce vulnerabilities that could compromise their operation.

This two-part webinar will provide an overview of spillway structures and accompanying energy dissipation facilities that are used to ensure that the supercritical flow condition is returned to a subcritical state in the receiving watercourse. Part 2 of the webinar introduces hydraulic design by empirical methods and follows with overviews on physical and computational fluid dynamic modeling. It will also discuss model prototype conformity and performance assessment due to design flood increase. The webinar concludes with presentations of real-world case studies along with lessons learned.

In Part 1, principles and best practices for design and performance assessment of spillway and energy dissipation structures, along with related case studies, were provided.

Webinar Speakers

speaker picDavid Mack

David Mack, is a Senior Structural Engineer, Principal with over 40 years of experience in the civil, hydraulic, and structural engineering disciplines. He has been involved in the design and construction of numerous hydraulic structures for major dam and irrigation projects in western Canada, completed dam safety reviews and potential failure modes assessments, and served on independent technical review boards.

speaker picJeremy Bruce

Jeremy Bruce, is a Hydrotechnical Engineer, Associate with 20 years of experience in hydrology and hydraulics for dams and hydroelectric facilities. Jeremy has been involved in the design and construction of large spillways and energy dissipating structures including the recently constructed Site C Clean Energy Project. He has worked on numerous physical hydraulic models in collaboration with the modeling laboratories in Canada and internationally and CFD studies for spillways and other energy dissipation structures.
