In this presentation, we will focus on a general methodology for obtaining stable and reliable numerical and experimental results. The methodology has been applied to investigate the repose angle of waste rock piles across different particle sizes and scales. We will discuss the effects of particle size on the repose angle of waste rock piles and present the validation and calibration process of numerical model. Finally, the validated and calibrated numerical model will be used to predict the repose angle of waste rock piles with different particle sizes and scales.

Presenter

Khawla Abbadi

Khawla has a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering from Mohammadia School of Engineers in Morocco (2019) and Master of Engineering from Polytechnique Montréal (2020). Currently, she is pursuing her PhD under the supervision of Professor Li LI at Polytechnique Montréal. Her research project focuses on the numerical modeling of the deformation of filtered tailings stored in northern regions, taking in to account the effects of climate change.

Yuyu Zhang

Yuyu Zhang is a doctoral student in mining engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, under the supervision of Professor Li Li. He has many years of working experience in the geotechnical engineering industry and has participated in several projects. His research focuses on the co-disposition of waste rock and mining tailings, numerical modeling of the co-disposition process, and the behavior of waste rock piles. He also studies the effects of particle sizes and scales on the mechanical and hydraulic properties of waste rock.

About le RDV Franco

Le Rendez-Vous du Comité Francophone de l'ACB is a periodic event (virtual and/or face-to-face) during which members of the committee receive a variety of presenters and guests to address and discuss various topics related to dams.

More informal and interactive than traditional webinars, this activity sometimes takes the form of a presentation, sometimes a discussion, and sometimes both.
