Presented in French

Not so long ago, the geotechnical characterization of mine tailings did not attract much attention in the practice of mining geotechnics. The recent failures of mining tailings retention structures that occurred over the last decade have demonstrated the complexity but also the necessity of this field of practice. Since then, the geotechnical characterization of mine tailings has seen growing interest as evidenced by the number of technical publications on the topic. How to navigate in an environment where the collective knowledge of the technical community must evolve at the same pace as research while keeping both feet anchored in the real needs of the industry? This presentation will be an opportunity to list the reasons which justify the need for geotechnical characterization of mine tailings, to recall some basic notions which would benefit from being more democratized among the next generation and our technical community and to take stock of the different in situ and laboratory characterization methods and tools currently available. The next anticipated developments will be briefly discussed without forgetting to talk about the challenges that our community of practice may face in the future.

Presenter

Michaël Demers Bonin

Michaël Demers Bonin graduated from the University of Sherbrooke with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in geotechnical engineering. Employed by Golder and now WSP, he was called upon to get involved in the realization and supervision of various geotechnical projects such as annual geotechnical inspections of mine tailings management facilities, geotechnical investigations including advanced geotechnical characterization of tailings and foundation materials based on in situ analysis and laboratory testing and geotechnical infrastructure design projects.

About le RDV Franco

Le Rendez-Vous du Comité Francophone de l'ACB is a periodic event (virtual and/or face-to-face) during which members of the committee receive a variety of presenters and guests to address and discuss various topics related to dams.

More informal and interactive than traditional webinars, this activity sometimes takes the form of a presentation, sometimes a discussion, and sometimes both.
