In this 2 half-day virtual workshop, you will deepen your competencies for conducting tailings dam breach analyses, based on the Tailings Dam Breach Analysis Technical Bulletin, that the Canadian Dam Association (CDA) published in 2021. The Tailings Dam Breach Working Group (WG) who prepared the Technical Bulletin is very excited to give this special training course.

Designed for dam safety professionals who wish to expand their knowledge about tailings dam failures and dam safety professionals who wish to gain a better understanding of the CDA Tailings Dam Breach Analysis Bulletin, this course will focus on the tailings dam specific issues and challenges that are critical to capture in such studies, which become more apparent from some of the recent catastrophic tailings dam failure. 

Participants will gain clarity on how to use and apply the key steps outlined in the Technical Bulletin. Specifically, attendees will learn about:

About the TBDA Technical Bulletin 

The Technical Bulletin provides a process and outlined key steps for conducting analyses as well as the hydrotechnical, geotechnical, rheological and modelling aspects that are relevant for these analyses. The objective is to promote the science of tailings dam breach analyses and build awareness on the risk of tailings dam failures.

Presenters

Mohammad Al-Mamun, M.Sc. Eng., P. Eng.

Mohammad (Mamun) Al-Mamun has twenty years of experience in geotechnical, geoenvironmental, and infrastructure engineering and led multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder teams that delivered complex and challenging design and construction projects. His areas of expertise include design and construction of embankments dams and waste dumps, dam safety management (water, hydropower, mining), regulatory compliance, risk management, tailings management, large site investigation and foundation characterizations programs including laboratory and in-situ testing.  Mamun received his B. Sc. in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and M.Sc. Eng. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada.

 

Violeta Martin, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Violeta Martin is a Specialist Hydrotechnical Engineer and Associate at Knight Piésold’s Vancouver office with a doctorate degree in hydrotechnical engineering from UBC. She is a civil engineer with 30 years of consulting and teaching experience and is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at UBC, a co-chair of the CDA working group for tailings dam breach guidelines, and a member of the CDA Dam Safety Committee. She has extensive experience with dam breach assessments for both water retaining and tailings dams, including impact assessments and life loss analysis. Her responsibilities include modelling and design in the fields of hydraulics, hydrology, sediment transport, wave generation and propagation, effluent mixing, and pipeline design for the hydroelectric and mining industries. 

 

Omid Mohseni, Ph.D., P.E.

Omid Mohseni, a senior water resources engineer at Barr Engineering Company, received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in civil engineering in 1999. He has more than 30 years of experience in design and analysis of hydraulic structures, hydrodynamic modeling of rivers and lakes, hydrologic modeling of watersheds, open-channel hydraulics, and stormwater treatment best management practices (BMPs). He has performed, managed, and reviewed over 40 dam breach analyses of water dams and tailings dams in North America during the past 22 years. Omid served as an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He has published 22 scientific articles in refereed journals.

 

Joanna Chen, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Joanna Chen is a senior principal geotechnical engineer with WSP Golder with over 27 years of geotechnical consulting engineering and academic research experience. Her focus has been on geotechnical, tailings and mine waste developments related to dam safety reviews, designs of tailings and water-retaining dams, waste dumps and open pit oil sands mine pitwalls, liquefaction assessment, landslide and tailings dam breach runout analyses.  Joanna has a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mechanics, a Master’s degree in Fluid Mechanics, and a Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering. She developed debris flow runout modelling program in her Ph.D. study which has been applied to landslide and tailings dam breach analyses internationally from mobilization to runout. Joanna has published 35 scientific articles in refereed journals and conference proceedings. 

 

Zoubir Bouazza, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Bouazza is a senior hydrology/hydraulics engineer holding a Masters and a Ph. D. in civil engineering. With more than 30 years of experience as a water resources specialist, he has developed a particular expertise in analysis and numerical modelling of hydraulic systems: watersheds, rivers, estuaries, lakes, reservoirs and storm drains. His professional experience covers design of hydraulic structures; development and implementation of hydrometeorological information systems; development and implementation of hydrological models; risk assessment of floods, erosion and sediment transport as well as environmental impact assessment of climate change. He has good knowledge of dam safety issues, water management plans and Emergency Preparedness Plans. He is acting as expert at BBA INC.

 

Shielan Liu, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Shielan Liu is a Senior Numerical Modeller with Klohn Crippen Berger Inc. She completed her Ph.D. with an experimental study on debris flow fluid mechanics and deposition processes from Meijo University in Japan in 2004. She developed her numerical modelling skills through over 23 years of international consulting and research experience. She led and independently reviewed over 50 water and tailings dam breach studies in the last decade. She authored and reviewed the corporate guidelines for water and tailings dam break study and failure impact assessment for two major mining companies in recent years. She is one of  industry partners with CanBreach, an NSERC-funded university-industry research program that aims to advance the knowledge on tailings dam breach inundation study.

 

Michael Etezad, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Michael Etezad is a principal geotechnical engineer at WSP Golder with over 25 years of geotechnical consulting and academic research experience, and an adjunct professor at Western University. He has been a project manager or design lead of many mining and hydropower dam projects in Canada and international locations. He is currently leading a research project on the liquefaction of tailings within WSP Golder in collaboration with Western University and the University of Toronto. Michael has published over 30 book chapters and technical papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings. Michael is a co-author of the Canadian Dam Association's (CDA) Guidelines for Tailings Dam Breach Analyses and a co-author of Guidelines for Mine Waste Dump and Stockpile Design. He is a member of the CDA Tailings Dam Breach working group.
