Geotechnical stability of mine waste rock piles: large-scale characterization, modeling and in-situ monitoring

In this presentation we will talk about mechanical characterization of coarse granular materials. Experimental downscaling methodologies will be discussed, as well as its limitations for obtaining parameters of soils containing oversized particles. Finally, applications will be presented in geotechnical stability projects for waste rock piles and open pit backfilling, including large-scale laboratory and in-situ tests, and field monitoring of a backfill of more than 150 meters deep.

Presenter

Carlos Ovalle, ing., Ph.D.

Carlos Ovalle has been a professor in the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal since 2018, and a member of Research Institute on Mines and the Environment (RIME) UQAT-Polytechnique. He has a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Universidad Santa María in Chile and a master's degree in geotechnical engineering from École Centrale Paris. In 2013, he received his doctorate from the École Centrale de Nantes in France. Carlos has 20 years of experience in environmental geotechnics for mining operations, and has participated in several projects in South America. His research interests include experimental and numerical developments for the characterization and modeling of geotechnical problems, with a particular focus on mining waste storage facilities.

About le RDV Franco

Le Rendez-Vous du Comité Francophone de l'ACB is a periodic event (virtual and/or face-to-face) during which members of the committee receive a variety of presenters and guests to address and discuss various topics related to dams.

More informal and interactive than traditional webinars, this activity sometimes takes the form of a presentation, sometimes a discussion, and sometimes both.
